Phase 3 Reopening
The Shubert Theatre was encouraged after hearing Governor Lamont’s directive last week moving the state of Connecticut into Phase 3 of reopening on October 8, which includes performing arts centers at 50% capacity with social distancing restrictions. We appreciate the Governor’s recognition of our industry which is an important economic driver for our city and state.
We are grateful for this move in the right direction, but the capacity limit with social distance requirements for the Shubert Theatre is less than 30%. This does not make it financially feasible for us to offer live performance right away. With Broadway still closed and many other states still enforcing the closure of performing arts venues, all Broadway touring companies are awaiting more of the country to be open again before resuming performing, and other live performers (comedians, musicians, family-friendly shows) are continuing to pause their travels.
During this time, we are continuing to re-assess air handling in the theatre, plans for patron flow with social distancing restrictions, cleaning parameters and ongoing training for our staff and volunteers for when the theatre reopens.
With the go-ahead from the Governor, we are now exploring opportunities to reconnect with our patrons – in small ways at the Shubert – and we are working to stay connected virtually until we can be back in person. For the safety and wellness of our staff and patrons, the Shubert will continue with plans to offer our Fall 2020 programming as a virtual season. Following the success of our first-ever virtual fundraiser in May, we are excited to bring a new version of our Signature Event, “Next Stop: New Haven AT HOME!” on Monday, October 26, 2020 at 7:30pm. We hope patrons will stay tuned to our website (shubert.com), social media channels and newsletter communications for updates to our virtual and live programming over the coming months.
We hope you will continue to support local artists and performing arts venues during this challenging time. Please know that we are working every day to make sure that you will be comfortable and safe when you return to our theatre. We look forward to hosting performances on our legendary stage and welcoming you back to the Shubert Theatre in the very near future.
